What to Bring to Your Notary Signing Appointment
When you schedule an appointment with a notary public, it's essential to come prepared with the right materials to ensure your signing goes smoothly.
Valid Identification is Required
Every person who will be signing documents must bring valid, government-issued photo identification. Acceptable forms of ID typically include a driver's license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. The notary is legally required to verify your identity before notarizing any documents, so this step cannot be skipped. Make sure your ID is current and not expired.
Bring Your Documents
You'll also need to bring all documents that require notarization. If you're unsure whether a document needs to be notarized, contact the notary beforehand to confirm. In most cases, you should not sign the documents before your appointment—the notary needs to witness you signing in their presence.
Why This Matters
These requirements protect everyone involved. Proper identification prevents fraud and ensures that the person signing is who they claim to be. By coming prepared with valid ID and your unsigned documents, you'll help make the notarization process quick, legitimate, and legally binding.
If you have questions about what ID is acceptable or what documents you need, don't hesitate to contact your notary in advance.
